Defense wins championships. Passing is more important than shooting, but, c'mon, what do you want to do when you look at a hoop? Shoot it! And shoot it we will. Get your balance, get your rhythm, remember to follow through. Though mechanics are important, we don't want to be mechanical. Relaxed, loose, eliminate excessive motion. Splash! Coach Fagan will tweak your shot; keep it yours but make it better. The goal will be to get every player 250 shots before we unleash you for the scrimmage where you will take and make the shots you practiced. Eyes on the rim, watch the ball go in!

At “Coached Scrimmage” the coaches, Billy Singleton, former captain at St John’s University, and Steve Fagan, former all-NYC baller and head women’s coach at Felician University, give you the plan and stay on you week after week, whether winning the scrimmages or losing, to read the defense, take care of the ball and execute more effectively. Defensively we challenge you to understand the impact you can have on the game when you dictate play. I mean you can sit back and react, but how does that make the world a better place? We're back playing basketball and it's best to get back to basics! The Brazilians call their brand of soccer, “The Beautiful Game”. Here at NTL, we call the process of studying, practicing, eating/sleeping/fully assimilating into bone marrow the fundamentals of basketball, “The Beautiful Basics”. On Monday evenings in Downtown Brooklyn join Hall of Fame NTL Coach Steve Fagan in drilling the things that will have you worshipping the game (and get a great sweat while doing it!). Program is intended to include beginners and not exclude players who come in with some decent basketball experience. Will always include drills and information necessary to the beginner player (“Beautiful Basics”) while striving to re-emphasize and re-focus on fundamentals for experienced players.

Back in the gym! Back to the basics! Basics are basics and everyone needs them but this clinic is pointed to those who see themselves as others may see them: as beginners (raw but oozing with potential!). 1) Learn and practice to dribble without looking at (or losing) the ball. 2) get a strong sense of where and how to play defense whether you are guarding the person with the ball or without the ball. D-E-F-E-N-S-E! 3) Layups. You gotta get the rhythm of the layup down. You don't want to blow your layups! 4) Passing. Be a strong passer. People LOVE to play with good passers! 5) Shooting form. This is where THAT becomes part of who you are. 6) Where to go and when to go there when your team has the ball. Screening. Pick & Roll. Fast breaks and “numbers” situations. Rebounding. 5 on 5 full court scrimmage play the last 1/3 of each session. All around awesomeness awaits you!

Back in the game! A smattering of drills followed by the coach throwing you in the pool and seeing how you swim. He'll blow the whistle and throw you a life jacket every time it seems you are drowning, or at least going under. You get the idea. Get better by doing. Everybody, meaning both teams, will be running the same offense (implemented and refined in the early weeks) all term. The goal is to identify skills and knowledge that is necessary for each player to perform more successfully within the team concept and to step back, again and again, week-after-week to work on those skills. Then the coach throws you in the pool again. I mean out on the court again. Game time!
